About

The 1984
Archive

Welcome...

1984.org documents the context and history of the 1984 Ghallughara — leading up to the attack on Sikhs in the Harimandar Sahib and Akal Takht Complex along with more than 100 gurduaras throughout the Panjab, the ensuing Sikh Genocide throughout India, and the onset of indiscriminate violence by the State.

To Combat Blackouts, Erasure and Revision

This archive is part of an ongoing project to collect and digitize the documents, eyewitness accounts, historical photographs, and media that capture the period surrounding 1984. Where the threat of state violence has loomed large to erase or contort the narrative of state-sponsored violence, this archive will act as a dispassionate haven of information.

The factual narrative of 1984 has been largely distorted or undermined. However, records illuminate the meticulous planning and propaganda undertaken by the Government of India. Digitization and archival of these records places the truth beyond destruction.
